Calcutta Kid is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Jessmeet "Jessie" Gulati. Hailing from San Diego, a former 10-year member and sonic architect of the Donkeys (Dead Oceans and Easy Sound Records). The Natural Frequency is Calcutta Kids’ debut release, with the exception of Wipe Those Tears Away, primarily a collection of mainly instrumentals. This collection of songs is truly a reflection of Jessie’s cultural roots spanning from India to America . As an Asian American Desi, Gulati has a deep connection to Indian music and rock and roll. Upon family visits to India, Jessie studied sitar in New Delhi under the guidance of his guru.
Musical influence develops mysteriously. It is clear that DNA and environment converge to create something entirely signature within The Natural Frequency. Growing up on 80’s Bollywood and Grubani (Sikh spiritual music), then exploring American underground and experimental music, Calcutta Kid’s compositions tease the balance between structure and absolute freedom. Wipe Those Tears Away shows Calcutta Kids ability to craft a perfect 3 minute psych rock gem that conjures Roky Erikson, followed by Sunbright Path which takes the listener on a journey through musical frontiers filled with sitar, a gibson SG, steel guitar, and modulated delay - all captured on a 4-track recorder which allows the music to breathe with wild edges, and also reminds of a 90’s lo-fi, punk rock ethos.
